A Networked Telerobotic Observatory for Collaborative Remote Observation of Avian Activity and Range Change

چکیده
The scientific field study of wildlife often requires vigilant observation of detailed animal behavior over extended periods. In remote and inhospitable locations, observation can be an arduous, expensive, and dangerous experience for field scientists. We are developing a new class of networked teleoperated robotic “observatories” that allows “citizen scientists” and professional scientists to remotely observe, record, and index animal activity and behaviors via the internet. This paper describes CONE-Welder, installed at the Rob & Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation in Texas to gather photographic and quantitative data for a biological study of avian activity and hypothesized range change for selected subtropical bird species. Since the system was deployed on 12 May 2008, over 600 users (“players”) have participated online. Players have requested over 2.2 million camera frames and captured over 29,000 photographs. Within these photos, citizen scientists have classified 74 unique species, including eight avian species previously unknown to have breeding populations within the region. The collected dataset quantifies seasonal presence of birds of particular interest, e.g., the Green Jay (Cyanocorax incas). This paper describes the system architecture, the game interface that provides incentives for player participation, and initial data collected. Scientific study of animals in situ requires vigilant observation of detailed animal behavior over weeks or months. When animals live in remote and/or inhospitable locations, observation can be an arduous, expensive, dangerous, and lonely experience for scientists. Emerging advances in robot cameras, long-range wireless networking, and distributed sensors make feasible a new class of portable r...
متن کاملCollaborative Teleoperation of Manipulation Tasks over the Internet using an Open, Component-based Architecture∗
The technological developments in distributed systems have led to new telerobotic applications, such as virtual laboratories and remote maintenance of complex equipment, built on top of Internet and distributed computing system infrastructures. These applications must satisfy both the general requirements of distributed computing, e.g. location transparency and interoperability, and the domain-...
متن کاملFrom Importer of Knowledge to Researcher of the Self: Exploring the Utility of Collaborative Action Research in Distance Second Language Professional Development
Teacher professional development, as a burgeoning term, has attracted a surge of interest in English language teaching. In second language (L2) professional development, the common orthodoxy has been one which considers teachers as that of knowledge consumers. It is commonly argued that top-down approaches to teachers’ professional development has done little to maximize teachers’ professionali...

Telerobots, remotely controlled robots, are widely used to explore undersea terrains and outer space, to defuse bombs, and to clean up hazardous waste. Until 1994, telerobots were accessible only to trained and trusted experts through dedicated communication channels. This chapter describes networked telerobots, a new class of telerobots controllable over networks such as the Internet, that are...
متن کاملDesign of Observer-based H∞ Controller for Robust Stabilization of Networked Systems Using Switched Lyapunov Functions
In this paper, H∞ controller is synthesized for networked systems subject to random transmission delays with known upper bound and different occurrence probabilities in the both of feedback (sensor to controller) and forward (controller to actuator) channels. A remote observer is employed to improve the performance of the system by computing non-delayed estimates of the sates. The closed-loop s...
